Forsaken

August 10, 2012

The first bird called out to the second, “Why have you forsaken me?”
To this, the second bird did not reply.

And so the first bird called out louder, “Why have you abandoned me?”
To this, the second bird still gave no reply.

And so the first bird began the circle of her flight again and cried out
in a loud despairing voice, “For whom or for what have you forsaken me?”

And then she saw him, dying on the pavement next to a bus stop
where the 32A was presently arriving ten minutes late.

They held each other and listened to the half-hearted complaints of the passengers.
His last words to her, “Do not think that I have forsaken you, my love.”
