Want and Need

October 8, 2011

I was confronted by both Want and Need,

each making their respective pleas.

First Want, indulgent and dramatic, dropped to his knees,

and convinced me with shameful ease.

Need then spoke of being truly free,

the possession of desire and desire’s possession of thee.

At this, Want was offended

and the matter suspended,

while Want defended his kin

and Need promoted discipline.

Many years have since gone by,

Want and Need still argue sides.

Time has forgotten their initial agitator,

just as Want and Need have forgotten your narrator.

Very nice how you personify Want and Need. Like the way you handle your rhyme and keep the rhyme a little off balance with the irregularity of the meter. Nicely done!
